Windows 10 is set to be released later this month. The OS will be available on flash drives, however, if you want to create your own bootable USB drive for Windows 10, you can do that pretty easily. Here’s how to:
Your upgrade to windows 10 is ready. The easy way to create a bootable USB drive for Windows 10
There’s always an “easy way” to do things on Windows using some kind of software. Creating a bootable USB drive is also pretty easy – here’s how to do it:
- Click and Open rufus.exe
- Once the user interface of the software opens up, plug-in your USB
- After that, look for the “Create a bootable USB drive option” and from the drop-down, select an ISO Image
- Then, click on the button next to the dropdown and select the Windows 10 ISO that you want to install
- Lastly, click on “Start” and wait for the software to create the bootable USB drive.
That’s pretty much it. You now have a bootable USB drive, just plug it in your device and make sure your BIOS is all setup and you should now be able to easily install Windows 10 using the bootable USB drive that you just created.
The hard way
If you don’t want to use any software, there’s another way of creating a bootable USB drive, but that’s a bit trickier. Here’s how to do it:
- First, make sure your USB drive is plugged in
- Search and open Command Prompt as an administrator
- Next, you’ll have to open the disk management utility using CMD (Command Prompt) – to do that, type in diskpart and hit enter
- After that, you will have to display the connected disks that are available – to do that, type in list disk and hit enter
- Then, you’ll need to select your USB drive – to do that, type select disk # and hit enter – you’ll have to replace the # with your disk number
- Next, you’ll have to clean the USB drive – to do that, type clean and hit enter
- Then you’ll need to create a bootable partition – type in create partition primary and hit enter
- You will now need to select the partition that you just created. To do that, type in select partition 1.
- After that, type active and hit enter
- Next, you’ll need to format the USB drive – just type in format fs=fat32 and hit enter
- You’ll now need to assign your USB drive a letter, to do that, just type in assign
- Lastly, copy all the Windows 10 files and paste it inside the USB drive. (You can copy the files by extracting an ISO or copy it from a Windows 10 disk).
That’s it! You have just manually created a Windows 10 bootable USB drive and it’s ready to install Windows 10 on your device.
Creating a bootable USB drive is pretty easy, to be honest. I’d recommend following the easy way of creating the bootable USB drive if you’re not an expert – however, if you’re an expert, just follow the hard way of creating the bootable USB drive and avoid using any type of software.
UPDATED 6/14: It doesn’t matter whether you’re a macOS Sierra or a Windows 10 user, it’s just a matter of time until your device refuses to start, which could happen for many reasons, including file corruption, hardware failure, and buggy update (just to name a few). If the unexpected happens with Apple computer, you can use a macOS bootable USB with the installation media to repair it.
This is one of the main reasons why you should always consider making a macOS bootable USB when your device is working properly. However, if it happens that none of your devices (MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro or Mac Mini) aren’t working when you need them the most, then you can use a PC to rescue your Apple device. You can use a Windows 10, Windows 8.1, or Windows 7 device to quickly create a USB bootable installation media to reinstall macOS Sierra on your Mac.
In this guide, you’ll learn the steps to create a macOS Sierra bootable USB installation on Windows 10, which you can use to reinstall or upgrade Apple’s OS.
Things to know before proceeding
Before you dive into this guide, you’ll need a few things, including:
- A broken Mac computer with Mac OS X or macOS Sierra (version 10.12 or later).
- A trial copy of the TransMac software.
- One high quality USB flash drive with 16GB of storage.
- A copy of Apple’s macOS (DMG file).
How to make a macOS bootable USB installation media
Use these steps to create a bootable USB drive with the latest version of macOS:
- Download and install TransMac on your Windows PC. This is a paid software, but it gives you a 15-day trial, which is more than enough time. (If this works for you and want to support the developer, you can purchase the full version.)
- Connect the USB flash drive you want to use to fix your Mac. If you have any data on the USB, remember to make a backup, as everything on it will be erased.
- Right-click TransMac, and select Run as administrator.
- If you’re using the trial version, wait 15 seconds, and click Run.
- On the left, right-click the USB flash drive, select Format Disk for Mac. You want to do this before creating the bootable media because there is a good chance that the drive was formatted using a Windows device. If this is the case, chances are that it’s using a MBR partition, and the USB drive needs a GPT partition to work on a Mac.
- On the warning message, click Yes to format the drive.
- Enter a name for the drive, such as “macOS bootable USB” and click OK.
- Click Yes to confirm.
- If the formatting completed successfully, click OK to continue.
- Right-click the USB flash drive, and select Restore with Disk Image.
- On the warning message, click Yes to confirm the data on the USB drive will be erased.
- Click the browse button on the right, locate the .dmg file with the macOS installation files.
- Click Open.
- Click OK.
- Click Yes to create the macOS USB bootable media.
Once the process completes, you can now insert the USB flash drive on your Mac computer to install, reinstall, or upgrade the operating system to the latest version of macOS, which can be Sierra or later.
How to create a GPT partition on a USB flash drive
If the USB flash drive is not working using TransMac, it could be still a partition problem. In this case, you want to redo the entire process again, but this time use the following steps to use the Diskpart command-line utility on Windows to create the appropriate GPT partition.
Use these steps to create a GPT partition on a removable drive:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result and select the Run as an administrator option.
- Type the
diskpart
command and press Enter. - Enter the
list disk
command to view all drives connected to your computer and press Enter. - Type the
select disk
command followed the number assigned for the USB flash drive (e.g.,select disk 4
), and press Enter. - Enter the
clean
command and press Enter. - Type the
convert GPT
command and press Enter. - Enter the
create partition primary
command and press Enter to complete the process.
Once you formatted the USB flash drive to a GPT partition, you can use the instructions mentioned above to use TransMac to create a bootable media, but this time skip the steps 5 through 9, and continue on step 10.
After the process completes, which can take up to an hour, connect the USB flash drive and power on your Mac holding down the Option key, select the USB drive to begin the installation of macOS.
If you’re having problems creating the bootable media, you can get a USB flash drive that comes with macOS Sierra on it with the link mentioned below. (I personally haven’t tried it, but it’s worth the try if nothing works.)

Apple updates its macOS around this time of the year. This year, the latest version of macOS has been named Mojave. Currently available for all supported Mac machines, the macOS Mojave is the latest version of macOS.
macOS Mojave bootable USB from Windows 10/8/7 PC
The macOS Mojave bootable USB can be prepared on a Mac without the help of third-party tools, just like how Windows bootable USB can be prepared from Command Prompt. However, if your Mac device is not bootable, you can prepare macOS Mojave bootable USB right from Windows PC as well.
In this guide, we will see how to create macOS Mojave bootable USB drive on a PC running Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7.
What you will need:
# macOS Mojave DMG file
# A USB flash drive with at least 16 GB of storage
# A PC running Windows 10, Windows 8 or Windows 7
# Trial copy of TransMac (no need to download now)
Once you have all items mentioned above, you can make macOS Mojave bootable USB on a Windows PC. In this guide, we’re creating macOS Mojave bootable USB on Windows 10, but you can use the same procedure on Windows 8 and Windows 7 as well.
Guide to prepare macOS Sierra bootable install USB on Windows 10/8/7
NOTE: The guide was originally written to prepare macOS Sierra bootable USB but it works with the latest macOS Mojave as well.
Step 1: Connect a USB drive with at least 16 GB of storage space to your Windows PC and move all data from USB drive to a safe place as the drive will be erased while preparing macOS Mojave bootable USB.
Step 2: Visit this page of TransMac and download the latest version of TransMac software on your PC. TransMac is a paid software but the 15-day trial copy can be used to prepare bootable USB without any issues. That said, if you often need to prepare macOS bootable USB from Windows, you should go ahead and buy the software.
Once the TransMac is downloaded, double-click on the setup file to run the installer and get it installed on your PC.
Step 3: Run TransMac software as administrator. To do so, type TransMac in Start menu search box, right-click on TransMac entry in search results, and then click Run as administrator option. When you see the TransMac Trial dialog box, Click Run button.
Alternatively, you can navigate to TransMac entry in Start menu, right-click on it, and then click Run as administrator option.
Step 4: Once TransMac is launched, in the left pane of the program, you will see the connected USB drive that you want to use to prepare macOS Mojave bootable USB. Right-click on the USB drive and then click Format Disk for Mac option.
Click Yes button when you see the warning dialog box.
Convert Mac Usb To Windows
This is because, if you have been using a USB flash drive with Windows operating system, the USB drive is likely using MBR partition type. So we need to partition the USB drive with GPT partition first before transferring the DMG file to the USB drive.
Step 5: Clicking Yes button will open Format Drive for Mac dialog box where you need to type a name for the drive. Since we are preparing Mojave bootable USB, let’s name the drive as Mojave install drive.
When you see the warning message again, click Yes button to continue and format the drive for Mac.
Step 6: Once the format is done, right-click on the USB drive again, and then click Restore with disc image option.
Click Yes button when you see the following warning dialog box.
Step 7: Clicking the Yes button will open Restore Disk Image to Drive dialog box. Under Disk image to restore section, click the small button with drive icon on it (refer to the picture below) to browse to macOS Mojave DMG file. Select the DMG file and then click Open.
Finally, click OK button.
Step 8: When you see the warning dialog box, click the Yes button to begin preparing your macOS Sierra bootable USB. The bootable USB should be ready in about 30 minutes. In our test, the tool took close to 45 minutes, though.
Once the bootable USB of Mojave is ready, you can connect it to your Mac device and begin installing macOS Mojave from it. Good luck!
We have recently shown you how to create a Windows 10 USB installer, but for those Mac users, that method won’t work since you can’t install the Windows executable file on your Mac. You can easily download the ISO file from the Microsoft website, but how can you create a USB installer in Mac? Here is how you can.
Getting the Windows 10 ISO file
1. To download the Windows 10 ISO file, you just have to visit this Microsoft site on your Mac. Select “Windows 10” from the drop-down menu, and then select the language. Lastly, select the “64-bit download” link to download the 64-bit ISO file.
The following instructions require you to have a USB drive of minimum 8GB. All the data in the USB drive will be wiped.
Creating Windows 10 USB Installer Via Bootcamp
1. In your Mac, open LaunchPad and type “bootcamp.” Select and open “BootCamp Assistant.”

2. In BootCamp Assistant, click “Continue.”
3. On the next screen, make sure the checkboxes beside “Create a Windows 7 or later version install disk” and “Download the latest Windows support software from Apple” are checked. Leave the last checkbox (install or remove Windows 7 or later version) unchecked.
4. Select the Windows 10 ISO file that you have previously downloaded and set the Destination disk to your USB drive.
5. A prompt will appear to inform you that the drive will be erased. Click “Continue” to proceed.
Bootcamp will then proceed to create the USB installer.
Once the installation is done, you will find a newly-mounted USB drive named WININSTALL in your Finder. You can now use it to install Windows 10 on any PC.
Note: if you have not upgraded to BootCamp 6, you might face the issue that “saving windows support software” is stuck and not moving. In this case, you can stop Bootcamp and follow the instruction here to fix the support software issue.
Creating Windows 10 USB Installer Via Terminal
If you are having an issue with BootCamp, you can try this method with the terminal.
1. Open the terminal and type the following command:
Replace
~/path/to/windows-10-iso
with the actual file path of the ISO file. This command will convert the ISO file to IMG format.Note: OS X tends to add a .dmg to the end of the IMG file. You can simply rename the file and remove the .dmg.
2. Next, check the location of your USB drive:
In this case, my USB drive is in “/dev/disk2.”
3. Unmount the USB drive.
Replace
/dev/diskX
with the location of your USB drive.4. Run the following command to create the USB installer:
Replace
/path/to/windows-10-iso
with the actual filepath of the ISO file and /dev/diskX
with the location of the USB drive. This will take some time.5. Lastly, eject the USB drive.
Once that is done, you will have a USB installer that you can use to install Windows 10.
